This past summer I taught my doubleweave sampler workshop at one of the regional weaving conferences. About midway through the workshop one of the participants, noticing that she wasn’t as far along as some of the others, lamented that she wasn’t a very fast weaver. I said that I’m not a very fast weaver either and never have been. She came up to me later and told me that hearing me say that was a breakthrough for her. She said it made her feel that she could relax and enjoy weaving comfortably at her own pace, which is what I always want my students to do.

I’ve been trying to get to India for at least ten years, but one life event or another has always kept me from following through on my plans. That is, until March of this year, when I went on a second textile tour with Behind the Scenes Adventures, along with a couple of my favorite textile traveling buddies from Houston.

In October I had the wonderful opportunity to travel with my partner and ten textile friends to Uzbekistan through Behind the Scenes Adventures. I first became consciously aware of Uzbekistan through the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, where I volunteer every summer. After India and Mexico, Uzbekistan is the most highly represented country at the market, and their textiles and ceramics amaze me each year with their level of artistry and craftsmanship.
